Speaker: Doug TallamyKnown best for his groundbreaking works outlining the ecological value of using native plants to transform the traditional American lawn into a thriving ecosystem for wildlife, Doug returns with his most accessible and actionable book yet – How Can I Help? Saving Nature with Your Yard.
To celebrate the official book release, we are excited to host Doug for an on-site lecture, reception and book signing event on April 15th from 1:30 – 3:30 pm.
How Can I Help? answers 499 of the most common questions Doug has received about ecological gardening to help make the act of building healthy habitats even more approachable. Covering questions about ecology and evolution, biodiversity, invasive species, insect declines, native and non-native plants, conservation and restoration, residential and city landscapes, urban issues, oak biology, keystone plants, Homegrown National Park, monarchs, supporting wildlife at home, this new book covers the nuances and granular detail of gardening with purpose.
In his talk, Doug will address many of these queries with the hope that the answers will further motivate all of us to help restore ecosystem function where we live, work, play, worship, and farm.
A short reception and book signing will follow in the conservatory. Books will be available for purchase, or you may bring your own copy. Admission to the gardens is included with your ticket.

Instructors: Robert Raguso, PhDGreat wine and food pairings either emphasize the similarities or highlight the differences between the two. Robert Raguso studies the floral scents of native plant species, including trilliums, a core collection at Mt. Cuba. Trilliums are noteworthy for not smelling like conventional flowers, with fragrances that evoke wine, cheese, fruit, and spices. He has assembled a “flight” of Mt. Cuba trilliums and several wines that complement their woodsy aroma. Explore the chemistry and ecological value of various trillium scents and take note of the pairings you like. (Ages 21 and over) Because this program takes place on-site while the garden is open to the public, general admission to the gardens is included in the price. This program is sold out.
